Will your graphics card fit?
Three dimensions matter, and length is only the first. A card also occupies a certain number of expansion slots in thickness, and its height — from the PCIe connector to the top of the cooler — can foul a side panel or a front-mounted radiator.
The manufacturer's length is not your card's length
Reference designs are the shortest version of any card. Board partners add larger coolers, and an overclocked triple-fan model can be 40–60 mm longer than the reference. Always check the specification for the exact model you intend to buy, not the chip.
Leave room for the power cable
A card that fits to the millimetre still needs its power connector attached, and the cable needs a bend radius. This is especially true of the 12V-2x6 connector, which manufacturers state should not be bent within 35 mm of the plug — a rule that has been implicated in melted connectors. Plan for at least 20 mm of clearance beyond the card itself.
Slot thickness blocks more than you expect
A 3-slot card in a board with two x16 slots usually renders the second one unusable. If you need a capture card, sound card or additional network adapter, count the slots before buying.
Heavy cards sag
Modern flagship coolers weigh well over a kilogram, and that load is carried by the PCIe slot and two screws. Over months this bends the card and can damage the slot. A support bracket costs very little and is worth fitting on anything 3 slots or thicker.
Airflow trade-offs
A long card often reaches the front fan mounts, which can force you to choose between the card and a front radiator. Check the interaction with the Case Airflow Calculator before committing to both.

How do I measure the space for a graphics card?
Measure from the rear expansion slot bracket forward to the nearest obstruction - usually the drive cage or a front-mounted fan or radiator. Subtract 20 mm for the power cable and its bend radius.
What if my card is slightly too long?
Many mid-tower cases allow the drive cage to be removed or moved, which frees 40-60 mm. Check the manual before assuming the card will not fit.
Does a 3-slot card block my other PCIe slots?
Usually yes. A 3-slot cooler physically covers the slot immediately below, and often the one after it. If you need expansion cards, plan the layout before choosing the graphics card.
Should I use a vertical GPU mount?
It looks good and eliminates sag, but it places the card close to the side panel, which restricts intake air. Unless the case is designed for it with a spaced-out panel, temperatures usually rise several degrees.
