What makes a PC VR-ready

VR is far more demanding than it looks on paper. A headset renders two images, one per eye, at a higher combined resolution than most monitors, and it must do so at a locked frame rate. Dropping frames in VR does not merely look bad — it causes genuine physical discomfort.

Frame rate is not negotiable

On a desktop, 45 fps is playable. In VR, missing the headset's refresh target causes juddering that leads to nausea within minutes. Every headset has a floor — 72, 90 or 120 Hz — and the system has to hold it consistently, not on average.

Reprojection is a safety net, not a solution

When a system cannot keep up, runtimes synthesise intermediate frames from the last real one. This prevents the worst of the discomfort but introduces artefacts around moving objects. It is there to catch occasional misses, not to prop up hardware that is consistently too slow.

Supersampling eats headroom

Headset lenses distort the image, so runtimes render above the panel resolution and then correct for it. That means the actual render target is often 1.4 times the nominal pixel count or more. It is why VR requirements look so much steeper than the headset's stated resolution suggests.

The CPU matters more than in flat gaming

Tracking, physics and the compositor all add processor work with a hard deadline. Simulation-heavy titles — flight simulators, racing sims, VRChat with many avatars — are frequently CPU-limited rather than GPU-limited, which surprises people who bought purely for the graphics card.

Standalone versus PC VR

A Quest running its own software needs no PC at all. Connected to a computer over Link or Air Link it becomes a PC VR headset with full desktop requirements. Wireless streaming additionally needs a solid 5 GHz or 6 GHz network — check yours with the Bandwidth Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What graphics card do I need for VR?

An RTX 3060 or RX 6600 class card is a realistic entry point for comfortable PC VR. For high-resolution headsets or simulation titles, an RTX 4070 class card or better is a much safer target.

Why does VR need such a high frame rate?

Because your inner ear expects the view to track your head exactly. Any lag or judder creates a mismatch between what you see and what you feel, which the body interprets as motion sickness.

Do I need a PC for a Meta Quest?

Not for standalone games, which run on the headset itself. You do need one for PC VR titles over Link or Air Link, and those carry full desktop requirements.

Is 16GB of RAM enough for VR?

It is the workable minimum. 32 GB is more comfortable, particularly for simulation titles and for VRChat, which loads large amounts of user content.

Does VR use more CPU than normal gaming?
