How much faster is each storage tier?

Storage has improved more dramatically than any other PC component over the past decade. A mechanical hard drive manages roughly 150 MB/s sequentially; a PCIe Gen5 NVMe drive exceeds 12,000 MB/s. That is an eighty-fold difference on paper — but the gap you actually feel is much narrower, and understanding why saves money.

Random access is what you notice

Booting Windows or loading a game level means reading thousands of small files scattered across the drive. A hard drive has to physically move its head for each one, which is why it takes several milliseconds per access. An SSD has no moving parts and responds in microseconds. That latency difference — not sequential throughput — is what makes an SSD transform a system.

Why Gen5 barely feels faster than Gen3

Moving from a hard drive to any SSD is transformative. Moving from a SATA SSD to NVMe is noticeable in file transfers and barely perceptible elsewhere. Moving from Gen3 to Gen4 to Gen5 NVMe changes almost nothing outside a benchmark, because games are limited by CPU decompression and engine work rather than by the drive. The figures below show sequential transfer, which is where those differences are largest — and least relevant to everyday use.

DirectStorage may change this

Microsoft's DirectStorage lets games read compressed assets straight into the graphics card and decompress them on the GPU, removing the CPU from the path. Where it is implemented, faster NVMe drives finally show a real benefit. Adoption remains limited, so it is a reason for mild optimism rather than a reason to buy Gen5 today.

Endurance and heat

Gen4 and Gen5 drives run hot and will throttle heavily during sustained writes without a heatsink. Check your slot and cooling with the NVMe Compatibility tool before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Gen5 SSD worth it for gaming?

Not today. Game load times are limited by CPU decompression and engine work, not drive speed, so a Gen5 drive typically loads a level within a second of a Gen3 one - while costing considerably more and needing active cooling.

How much faster is an SSD than a hard drive?

Sequentially, roughly 5x for SATA and 25-80x for NVMe. In practice the random-access latency difference matters more: boot times typically fall from around 45 seconds to under 15, and level loads from a minute to a few seconds.

Should I put games on a separate drive?

It is a sensible approach. Keep Windows and your most-played titles on NVMe, and use a larger SATA SSD or hard drive for bulk storage and games you play rarely.

Do SSDs wear out?

They have finite write endurance, but modern drives are rated for hundreds of terabytes written. Typical consumer use writes a few terabytes a year, so the drive will be obsolete long before it wears out.
