How aspect ratio is calculated
Aspect ratio is the proportion between a display's width and height, reduced to its simplest form. The calculation divides both numbers by their greatest common divisor: 2560×1440 shares a divisor of 160, giving 16:9.
The ratios you will actually meet
- 16:9 — the standard for almost everything: 1080p, 1440p and 4K.
- 16:10 — slightly taller, popular for productivity and on laptops. 1920×1200 and 2560×1600.
- 21:9 — ultrawide. 3440×1440 is the common enthusiast size.
- 32:9 — super ultrawide, effectively two 16:9 monitors joined together.
- 4:3 — the classic shape, now only found on older panels and some retro setups.
- 3:2 — taller again, used by Microsoft Surface and a few laptops.
Ultrawide and games
A 21:9 monitor shows more at the sides rather than shrinking the picture, which is excellent in racing and flight titles and in most first-person games. Some competitive shooters lock the vertical field of view instead, so an ultrawide gives no advantage, and a few older games letterbox entirely. It also means more pixels to render — 3440×1440 is about 34% more work than 2560×1440.
Ratio does not tell you sharpness

Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratio is 2560x1440?
16:9, the same as 1080p and 4K. All three are the standard widescreen shape, which is why content scales between them without black bars.
Is 21:9 ultrawide worth it for gaming?
For immersive single-player games, racing and simulators it is a genuine upgrade. For competitive shooters the benefit is smaller, and a handful of games do not support it properly. Remember it is also roughly a third more pixels to render than 16:9 at the same height.
Why does my video have black bars?
The content was shot in a different ratio to your screen. Most cinema is 2.39:1, wider than a 16:9 monitor, so bars appear top and bottom. On a 21:9 ultrawide those films fill the screen almost exactly.
Is 16:10 better than 16:9?
For work, yes - the extra vertical space shows more of a document, spreadsheet or code file. For video and games, 16:9 matches the content exactly, so 16:10 introduces small black bars.
