How frame rates are estimated

Every frame requires work from both the processor and the graphics card, and your actual frame rate is set by whichever finishes last. We estimate each separately — a CPU-limited figure from its benchmark score and memory speed, and a GPU-limited figure from its score against the demand of your resolution, quality preset and the specific game — then take the lower.

Each game loads hardware differently

Competitive shooters like CS2 and Valorant run on lightweight engines and lean heavily on the processor, which is why they reach very high frame rates on modest graphics cards. Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 are the opposite: the GPU does almost all the work. The per-title estimates below apply each game's own weighting rather than a single average.

1% lows are the number that matters

The average tells you how the game runs most of the time; the 1% low tells you how it runs at its worst. Those worst moments are what you feel as stutter. A system averaging 120 fps with 45 fps lows feels considerably worse than one averaging 90 with 75 lows — and a large CPU bottleneck or insufficient memory is usually the cause.

VRAM causes a different kind of problem

Running out of video memory does not gradually lower your frame rate; it produces sudden hitches as data is moved across the PCIe bus. The VRAM column below flags where a title's texture requirements exceed your card at the chosen resolution.

Treat these as guidance

These are modelled estimates calibrated against real testing, not measurements of your machine. Drivers, background software, cooling, game patches and individual silicon all shift real results. Frequently asked questions

How many FPS do I need?

60 fps is the comfortable baseline for single-player games. 120-144 fps is where competitive play benefits, and beyond about 240 the returns are very small for most people. There is no point exceeding your monitor's refresh rate by much.

Why is my actual FPS different from this estimate?

Estimates are modelled from benchmark scores, not measured on your machine. Drivers, background software, thermal limits, game version and specific settings all shift real results, often by 10-15% in either direction.

What are 1% lows?

The frame rate during the worst 1% of frames - the stutters you actually notice. They matter more to how a game feels than the average does, and they are hurt most by CPU bottlenecks and insufficient memory.

Will lowering settings increase my FPS?

If you are GPU-limited, substantially. If you are CPU-limited, barely at all - lowering graphics settings reduces the graphics card's work, not the processor's. Lowering resolution has the same asymmetry.

Does more RAM increase FPS?

Only up to the point where you have enough. Going from 8 GB to 16 GB removes stutter; going from 16 GB to 32 GB rarely changes frame rates. Faster memory, however, does help CPU-limited titles.
