Fitting an NVMe drive
M.2 is a physical form factor; NVMe is the protocol that runs over it. Four things need to line up: the drive must be short enough for the slot's standoff, the key must match (M-key for NVMe), the slot must provide enough lanes, and — for Gen4 and Gen5 — there must be a way to get heat away from the controller.
Length is set by the standoff screw
The numbers describe dimensions: 2280 means 22 mm wide, 80 mm long. Almost every consumer drive is 2280, but compact boards and laptops sometimes only take 2242. The standoff can usually be moved to a shorter position, not a longer one.
SATA M.2 drives look identical and are not
Some M.2 drives use the SATA protocol rather than NVMe, and cap out around 550 MB/s. They are keyed differently (B+M rather than M) and will not work in an NVMe-only slot. If a drive is unusually cheap for its capacity, check which protocol it uses.
Heat is the real constraint
Gen4 and especially Gen5 controllers run hot. Without a heatsink, a drive will hit its thermal limit during sustained writes and drop to a fraction of its rated speed — sometimes below SATA levels. Most motherboards now include M.2 shields; use them. This does not affect gaming, where reads are short and bursty, but it matters enormously when copying large files.
Faster is rarely better in practice
Game load times are dominated by CPU decompression and engine work, not drive throughput. A Gen5 drive typically loads a level within a second of a Gen3 one. Buy capacity over sequential speed — see the SSD Speed Comparison for the detail.
Check what installing it costs you
On many boards, populating a second or third M.2 slot disables SATA ports or drops the graphics slot to x8. Work out what that costs with the PCIe Compatibility tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Gen5 SSD in a Gen4 slot?
Yes. It runs at Gen4 speeds, roughly 7000 MB/s instead of 12000. Everything works - you simply cannot use the extra headroom you paid for.
Do NVMe drives need a heatsink?
Gen3 drives do not. Gen4 benefits from one and Gen5 requires it. Without adequate cooling, sustained writes cause thermal throttling that can drop speeds dramatically. The motherboard's M.2 shield is usually sufficient.
Will installing an M.2 drive slow down my graphics card?
On many consumer boards, yes - certain M.2 slots share lanes with the primary x16 slot and drop it to x8. The performance cost is usually only a few percent, and moving the drive to a different slot often avoids it entirely.
What is the difference between M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe?
They share a connector shape but not a protocol. SATA M.2 tops out around 550 MB/s and uses a different key, so it will not fit an NVMe-only slot. NVMe runs over PCIe and is many times faster.
