How to compare two processors

Core counts and clock speeds are the specifications manufacturers advertise, but neither predicts real performance on its own. A processor with fewer cores at a lower clock can comfortably beat one with more of both, because architecture, cache and memory latency matter enormously.

Gaming and productivity reward different things

Games mostly depend on a handful of fast threads and on cache. That is why AMD's X3D chips, with their large stacked cache, win gaming benchmarks against processors that have twice the cores. Rendering, compilation and video encoding scale with total core count instead, so the ranking can invert completely between the two workloads. The performance score used here is weighted towards gaming, matching the Bottleneck and FPS calculators — the core-count row is the better guide for content creation.

The platform costs more than the chip

Two processors on different sockets are not really a like-for-like choice. Moving between AM5 and LGA1851, for example, means a new motherboard, and possibly new memory if one takes DDR4 and the other DDR5. Factor the whole platform into the price rather than the chip alone.

Power draw follows you around

A processor pulling 100 W more needs a stronger cooler, raises case temperatures, makes the system louder and costs more to run. Check the cooling requirement with the CPU Cooler Compatibility tool before assuming a chip drops straight into your build.

Match the CPU to the graphics card

The fastest processor available is wasted behind a modest graphics card at 4K, where the GPU is doing nearly all the work. Balance is what matters — the Bottleneck Calculator shows the pairing at your resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Are more cores always better?

No. Games rarely use more than eight cores well, so a fast six or eight-core chip often beats a slower sixteen-core one for gaming. For rendering, compiling and encoding, though, more cores wins almost linearly.

Why does the 7800X3D beat processors with more cores?

Its stacked 3D V-Cache holds far more game data close to the cores, which removes a lot of waiting on system memory. Games are unusually sensitive to that, which is why it leads in gaming while losing to higher-core chips in rendering.

Is Intel or AMD better right now?

AMD's X3D parts lead in gaming and run cooler; Intel's higher core counts often win in mixed productivity work and sometimes cost less per core. Compare the specific chips you are considering rather than the brands.

Does a faster CPU improve frame rate?

Only if the CPU is what limits you. At 1080p with a strong graphics card, yes. At 4K the GPU usually does nearly all the work, and a faster processor changes very little.
