What actually sets your ping
Ping is the round trip: your input travels to the server and the response travels back. Light in glass fibre moves at roughly two-thirds of its speed in a vacuum, about 200,000 km/s, which sets a floor nothing can beat. A server 500 km away has a theoretical minimum of about 5 ms round trip.

Why your real ping is two to three times that
Data does not travel in a straight line. It passes through your router, your ISP's network, several intermediate providers and the hosting network, and each hop adds processing time. Cables follow roads and seabeds rather than great circles. Two or three times the theoretical figure is normal and healthy.
What you can and cannot change
You cannot change physics. You can change everything local: a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi typically saves 5–20 ms and, more importantly, removes the spikes that cause rubber-banding. Choosing a nearer regional server usually matters more than any hardware you can buy.
Jitter is worse than latency
A steady 60 ms feels far better than a connection swinging between 20 and 90 ms. Prediction in modern netcode compensates well for consistent delay but poorly for a moving target. If your gameplay feels erratic despite a good average, jitter is the likely culprit.
A "gaming router" will not lower your ping
Quality-of-service features help when your own network is saturated — a large download while you play — but they cannot make the internet shorter. Save the money and run a cable instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ping for gaming?
Under 20 ms is excellent, 20-50 ms is good and unnoticeable in most games, 50-100 ms is playable but a handicap in competitive shooters, and above 100 ms is a real disadvantage in fast-paced titles.
Why is my ping high even on fast internet?
Bandwidth and latency are separate things. A gigabit line to a server on another continent still has a high ping, because distance sets the floor. High ping on a nearby server usually points to Wi-Fi, network congestion or poor ISP routing.
Does Wi-Fi increase ping?
Yes, typically by 5-20 ms, and it introduces jitter, which matters more. If competitive gaming is important to you, an Ethernet cable is the single most effective upgrade available.
Can a VPN lower my ping?
Occasionally, if your ISP routes badly and the VPN happens to take a shorter path. Far more often it adds a hop and raises latency. Test before assuming it helps.
Is satellite internet usable for gaming?
Geostationary satellite adds 500 ms or more and is unusable for real-time games. Low-earth-orbit services such as Starlink reach 25-60 ms, which is genuinely playable, though jitter remains higher than on fibre.
